Faculty/staff news update, through February 2010

Academe welcomes news from WSU faculty and staff about research, teaching and service activities. This column will recognize grants, honors, awards, presentations and publications, new appointments, new faculty, sabbaticals, retirements and the deaths of our current and former colleagues.

AWARDS, HONORS, OPPORTUNITIES

Deborah Ballard-Reisch, professor and Kansas Health Foundation Distinguished Chair in Strategic Communication, Elliott School of Communication, was the lead organizer for a WSU Feed Haiti million-meal event Feb. 5-8 at the Eugene M. Hughes Metropolitan Complex. The effort was in partnership with international hunger relief organization Numana Inc.

Nikki Currie, assistant professor, counseling, educational and school psychology, has been elected president of the Kansas Association of Counselor Educators and Supervisors. She was also recently appointed scholarship reviewer for the Barbara Gazda scholarship for the Association of Specialists in Group Work, a division of the American Counseling Association.

Lynne Davis, Ann and Dennis Ross Endowed Faculty of Distinction in Organ, performed a recital on Feb. 28 for the St. Louis French Festival. She performed at the Cathedral Basilica in St. Louis. 

Nick Taylor, a WSU graduate who assists with WSU鈥檚 tennis program, won the Quad Wheelchair Doubles Title at the Australian Open, sponsored by the U.S. Tennis Association in January. 

PRESENTATIONS AND PUBLICATIONS

Nikki Currie, assistant professor, counseling, educational and school psychology, attended the December 2009 International Conference on Social Science Research where she presented a paper based on her dissertation, 鈥淎 case study of incarcerated males participating in a canine training program.鈥 

Jay M. Price, associate professor and director, public history, presented his recently published book 鈥湷扇送诽踱檚 Lebanese Heritage,鈥 co-authored with Matthew Namee and Victoria Foth Sherry, at the Fifth Annual Kansas Author Dinner on Feb. 26 in 成人头条. The event is organized by the 成人头条 alumnae association of Kappa Kappa Gamma as a fundraiser for children鈥檚 literacy programs.

Michael Rogers, professor and chair, human performance studies, co-authored a paper with colleagues from Nagoya City University in the Journal of Physical Activity and Health (volume 6, issue 4, pages 467-474) titled 鈥淓fficacy of an accelerometer-guided physical activity intervention in community-dwelling older women,鈥 focusing on women in Japan.

Niall Shanks, Curtis D. Gridley Distinguished Professor in the History and Philosophy of Science, participated in a panel discussion in February at the University of California at Los Angeles about the conflict over animal research.

IN MEMORIAM

Ina Marie (Bally) Grimes, 93, retired secretary to the WSU dean of admissions, died March 1 in Valley Center. She is survived by her daughter, Elaine Tibbets (Pete) of Newton; sons, Alan Grimes (Rose) of Overland Park; Anthony Grimes (Tina) of North Carolina; Peter Grimes of Park City; sister, Iris Malcom (Max) of Augusta; brother, Sam Bally (Helen) of Tampa, Fla.; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by parents Blanche and Frank Bally; husband Charles H. Grimes Jr.; sons, Daniel W. Grimes and Mark E. Grimes. Funeral service has been held. Memorials to St. Jude Children鈥檚 Hospital.

Gary L. Miller, provost and vice president, academic affairs and research, had his commentary 鈥淗igher education benefits students, society鈥 published in the Jan. 28 成人头条 Eagle. .
