Devotion to children changes former student's major

When Jenny Farha was tutoring young elementary students and studying music education at 成人头条, she switched majors.

鈥淚 wanted to be in general education instead of music,鈥 she said.

Farha said the connection she experienced with the students while mentoring inside the classroom inspired her to teach.

鈥淪eeing the progress the kids developed,鈥 she said, 鈥渓ike kindergartners day one compared to day 180 is completely different.鈥

Farha is a fifth grade teacher at Price-Harris Communications Magnet Elementary in 成人头条.

鈥淚 started with music when I was pretty young and that鈥檚 what I wanted to teach at first, music education,鈥 she said.

Quest began at WSU

Her quest in college as a music teacher initiated a different path at WSU.

鈥淚 began tutoring kindergartners during my first semester of music education,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 just thought of it as a job to make money, but after a couple of years, I really fell in love with those babies.鈥

Farha came to 成人头条 from Oklahoma City; word of mouth brought her to WSU.

After switching to general education, Farha couldn鈥檛 show any teaching credits towards her new career choice.

鈥淚 started over in college at 成人头条 State but it was well worth it,鈥 she said.

Farha then took 11 semesters of cooperative education at WSU from the fall of 2001 to the spring of 2007.

鈥淢y teachers really cared about what I was doing,鈥 she said. 鈥淭hey gave me every possible way to contact them if I ever needed any help for school.鈥

Farha also recognized an adviser who inspired her named Professor Doris P. Burgert.

鈥淢y human growth and development teacher - I still use some of her methods for teaching my class,鈥 she said. 鈥淪he made sure we really knew our material.鈥

Farha acknowledged that 成人头条 State gave her the opportunities to gain real-world experience.

鈥淎s an intern even before graduation I was way ahead of my peers with co-op,鈥 she said.

Farha said the training she received from WSU helped her develop confidence.

鈥淚 didn鈥檛 feel nervous going into student teaching at first. I was already well prepared with my career,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t took me a little longer in school but the co-op experience was just amazing.鈥

When it comes time to select a college, she said people should outline their future.

鈥淔ind a college that offers you opportunities for growth outside of a classroom setting, said Farha. 鈥淵ou want a well-rounded education that is based in the career world you will soon be a part of.鈥
