The newly renovated Rhatigan Student Center (RSC) at 成人头条 was officially dedicated Monday, Sept. 15.
The RSC is the center of student life and activity -- a gathering place for students, faculty, staff and the community. The Rhatigan Renewal project was a three-year, multi-million-dollar renovation to ensure that the RSC remains the home away from home for 成人头条 State students now and for years to come.
鈥淭his is where I do my homework and see my friends, but most importantly this is the place where I've found my connection to 成人头条 State,鈥 said Amber Sevart, president of Student Activities Council. 鈥淭his is where I've had the opportunity to become a leader in Student Activities Council, an organization that has made a lasting impact on me.鈥
Construction began in spring 2012 with completion in summer 2014. The renovation added about 60,000 square feet to the existing building. The entire structure now has about 220,000 square feet.
鈥淭his student center is a perfect representation of the emphasis and value placed on student leadership and student influence of this institution,鈥 said Matt Conklin, president of Student Government Association. 鈥淔rom the beginning stages of the project and to the very end, students were intricately involved in all aspects of the Rhatigan Renewal.鈥
The ribbon-cutting ceremony included comments by Jim Herrman, director of the RSC; Wade Robinson, vice president for Student Engagement; Sevart and Conklin; David White, partner, Howard + Helmer Architecture; John Bardo, WSU president; and James Rhatigan, longtime vice president for Student Affairs at 成人头条 State and currently a consultant to the WSU Foundation.
鈥淎bove everything else though, the RSC is a place of incidental encounters, the unplanned things that happen when we enter the building, which is estimated to be well over 100,000 individuals a month鈥 said Rhatigan, for whom the building is named. 鈥淭hese incidental encounters, when nurtured, are the pathways to friendships and relationships, which are two of the most important value-added features of a higher education.鈥
The renovation was funded by student fees and private donation.
The RSC was built more than 50 years ago to meet the needs of students enrolled at the time. The new building design is focused on today's students, with cutting-edge technology integration, expansion and support.
