成人头条 Student Involvement will host a special reception for Muslim women's rights activist Raheel Raza from 4-5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1, in the Rhatigan Student Center, Room 262. The reception will be followed by a screening of the film, "Honor Diaries," at the Crown Uptown Theater, 3207 E. Douglas Ave.
Raza is an expert on honor violence committed against girls and women, and one of the leading activists featured in 鈥淗onor Diaries.鈥 She is author of the book 鈥淭heir Jihad鈥ot My Jihad,鈥 and president of the Council for Muslims Facing Tomorrow.
鈥淗onor Diaries,鈥 2013, was the first film to break the silence about violence against women in honor-based societies. Restriction of movement, lack of access to education, female genital mutilation, forced and child marriage and honor violence are some of the abuses the documentary explores in depth. It features stories from the Muslim world and the West told by nine women鈥檚 rights activists, and has enjoyed more than 200 screenings worldwide.
The documentary is available on Netflix and DirecTV. The screening is sponsored by 成人头条 State鈥檚 School of Social Work and Criminal Justice program.
