Nursing professor committed to practicing in underserved areas

  • Dr. Alicia Huckstadt has secured a federal grant that will assist 16 graduate nursing students.
  • The grant will help fund students committed to practicing in underserved or rural areas.

The College of Health Professions at 成人头条 has been awarded a $348,267 grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to fund primary care nurse practitioner graduate students intending to practice in rural or underserved areas.

Dr. Alicia Huckstadt, professor and director of graduate program in the School of Nursing, procured the federal funding to assist students completing at least 50 percent of their education in medically underserved areas. The funds enable recipients to complete their nurse practitioner education, gain advanced cultural and diversity knowledge and join the workforce at faster rates.

The funds are provided for students in advanced nurse training programs, particularly those committed to working in family health and mental health programs in rural or underserved areas.

Many rural areas in Kansas are experiencing nursing shortages, and Huckstadt says WSU's involvement in the grant program is a key part of tackling the problem.

鈥淲e鈥檙e committed to addressing health care issues and improving the health of our community and state,鈥� said Huckstadt.

The grant will fund 16 students for the entire year. The nurse practitioner alumni will provide primary healthcare across the state and nation, work to eliminate health disparities and increase access to health care.
