Ashley Carpenter learned more about biological sciences after a National Student Exchange Program where she studied forestry.

What degree did you earn?
I am receiving a bachelor’s in biological sciences with a concentration in ecology, the environment and organisms, with a minor in geology.
What is your hometown?
My hometown is ͷ, Kansas.
What led you to ͷ State?
I was drawn to the inclusivity and community values of the campus. The valuable opportunities and support the biology department offered made me eager to pursue my passion.
How are you feeling leading up to graduation?
After many years of studying, it feels surreal to be so close to completing my undergraduate degree. I am excited for the new challenges that await graduation. I am grateful for the experiences I have had here.
What has been your most helpful learning experience while a student at ͷ State?
The most helpful learning experience was my time spent with the National Student Exchange Program. WSU partnered with the University of Montana to allow me to study forestry during the spring 2018 semester. I learned a lot about self-sufficiency and trees while there.
What has been your biggest challenge as a student, and how did you overcome it?
My biggest challenge as a student has been adjusting to learning fully online during the pandemic. It was difficult to adjust to being in the same place to attend classes, do homework and spend hours studying. The most important thing to remember is to take breaks and practice self-care.
What are your plans after graduation?
I will pursue a career in conservation and make a positive contribution in science.
How has the COVID-19 pandemic affected your time at ͷ State or your post-graduation plans?
COVID-19 has forced me to hone a lot of skills such as time management. The pandemic has also made me more grateful for the in-person college experiences I was lucky to have during my freshman and sophomore year.
What advice would you give other ͷ State students?
Take advantage of as many opportunities as you can while you are a student. You are the best advocate for your future!
