WSU named a National Center for Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education

The National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security have designated 成人头条 as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education (CAE-CDE). The designation, which applies through academic year 2024, is in recognition of the WSU College of Engineering鈥檚 graduate certificate in Information Assurance and Cybersecurity.

Such designations are awarded in support of the National Cyber Strategy, adopted in September 2018, which address the role of higher education in addressing a critical shortage of professionals with cybersecurity skills.

鈥淵our ability to meet the increasing demands of the program criteria will serve the nation well in contributing to the protection of the national information infrastructure,鈥� said Karen Leuschner, NSA National CAE program manager.

2020-21 FAFSA releases on Oct. 1 -- Get a head start on the race to completion

There is never a consequence for at least completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You may be eligible for an award you never realized! Completing the application early could also make you eligible for some very limited student aid programs. We encourage you to finish the FAFSA no matter what; there is no harm in trying.

The 2020-2021 FAFSA becomes available on Tuesday, Oct. 1. WSU鈥檚 priority date for consideration for certain types of aid with limited funding is Dec. 1. That means you have a two-month window to submit your FAFSA online and provide any additionally requested documentation to our office.

The Shocker Learning Center will host an open house from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. today (Wednesday, Sept. 25) in 107 Lindquist Hall. Stop by for treats and fall in love with learning! The Shocker Learning Center (SLC) is open from 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday. It is the home of Student Success鈥� Academic Success Programs.

The following programs are offered in the center:

- Supplemental Instruction (SI): Free, weekly group study sessions led by a certified SI Leader who has previously succeeded in the course. Meet with your SI Leader individually during their office hours.

- Tutoring: Free one-on-one and small group educational support with a trained tutor.

- Peer Coaches: Peers helping peers with time management, study skills, goal setting, organizing assignments, note taking, and referrals to other resources on campus.

On Thursday, Sept. 26, parking lot 10 (Corbin Education lot) will be closed at noon for an event, and lot 2W west of Koch Arena will close at 6 p.m. through Friday afternoon Sept. 27.

It is especially important that you provide and update an emergency contact. The person you list will only be contacted in the event of a health or safety emergency in which you are personally involved. If you live on campus, this will also be the person contacted should you be reported as missing. You may list a parent, family member, spouse, or other trusted individual as your emergency contact.

Find the link to your Profile page on the myWSU Home tab, under Student Tools > myContact Info. A separate link there also provides an opportunity to update self-reported military affiliation.

FUN series at Ulrich Museum kicks off Friday with presentations from four captivating WSU researchers

The Ulrich Museum of Art on the 成人头条 campus invites you to join us from 4-5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, for the first installment of the FUN series for this new academic year.

FUN is a PechaKucha style presentation of campus-wide research on three Fridays, four presentations, seven minutes each. This program is an extension of the museum's "Solving for X" series, sharing research across campus with the community. The event is free and open to the public. A reception will follow the presentations.

The four presenters for Sept. 27 are:

Neal Allen, associate professor and Department Chair of Political Science, whose talk is titled "The Transactional Politics of Public Art: White Supremacy Never Dies."

Nils Hakansson, associate professor of Biomedical Engineering, whose presentation is titled "Biomechanics: Quantifying the Art of Movement."

Ehsan Salari, assistant professor of Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering, whose presentation is titled "Optimizing Radiation Therapy for Cancer Patients."

Step Afrika coming Sept. 27

Join Student Activities Council and the Multicultural Greek Council for a fun and exciting event, Step Afrika! at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, in the CAC Theater.

Step Afrika! is the first professional dance company dedicated to the African-American tradition of "stepping.鈥� Step Afrika! Blends the percussive dance styles practiced by historically African American fraternities and sororities, African traditional dance, and influences from a variety of other dance and art forms. The blend of technique, agility, and pure energy makes each performance unique and leaves the audience with their hearts pounding.

Learn about trademark basics in upcoming workshop

University Libraries is holding the workshop 鈥淭rademark Basics: Protect Your Business Name鈥� from 5:30-7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, in 217 Ablah Library. Discover the difference between a trademark, service mark, and registered mark. Then, learn how to search for existing marks and logos and walk through the online trademark application process.

This workshop is one in the Entrepreneurship Research Series happening throughout the semester. The workshops in this series are open to the public.

8th Annual #DTTW: 24 Hour Film Race + Sunday Night Showcase

Join us for the 8th annual Down to the Wire鈩� (DTTW) 24 HR Film Race! Registered teams must write, shoot, edit a five-minute short film, and submit it in just 24 hours. Films are scored on the best use of the required elements and must have wholly original content.

Twelve hours later, teams are unaware of which films are chosen for the Top 15 until they are screened that night at the Century II Mary Jane Teall Theater on Sunday, Sept. 29th. Doors open at 6 p.m., and Showcase starts at 7 p.m.

Admission is $15 for the Sunday Night Showcase; $12 for grade school students through college.

Garba Night 2019 on Oct. 5 in RSC Shirley Beggs Ballroom

Come, dance the Indian way from 7-11:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, in the RSC third floor Shirley Beggs Ballroom. Admission is free.

Flashes of vivid colors, sounds of wooden sticks hitting each other rhythmically, laughter, dancers whirling around keeping pace with the energetic music, this is what you will experience.

AHINSA brings you 鈥淕arba Night,鈥� an interactive, participatory Indian folk dance festival. The event is free, all are welcome and no experience is needed. Introductory lessons will be provided.

What is Garba? Garba or Dandiya Raas (with sticks), is a fun, high-energy folk dance for both men and women that originated in the state of Gujarat, India. This event will have a DJ playing traditional music with a Bollywood (modern) twist 鈥� strong, rhythmic beats gradually increasing in pace and intensity, challenging us to dance.

Stay safe with SAC!

Come sweat, relieve stress, and stay safe with Student Activities Council as we learn some new techniques for self-defense at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, in 145 Heskett Center.

Self-defense is a set of awareness, assertiveness, verbal confrontation skills, safety strategies, and physical techniques that enable someone to successfully escape, resist, and survive violent attacks. Not only will this class demonstrate physical techniques, we will also hone our psychological awareness and verbal confrontation skills. Free goodies will be given to participants after the class. Preregistration is required, and space is limited.

Sickle Cell Knowledge and Perceptions Study

 

Participants are needed to help with the study 鈥淎ssessing the Knowledge, Perceptions, and Attitudes of Sickle Cell Disease in Healthcare, Black and Latinx American, and General Populations within the Midwest.鈥�

In this study, we hope to learn about your understanding of sickle cell disease and trait, the complications, stigma, and perceptions related to the disease. The survey will ask questions to gauge your knowledge, perceptions, and attitudes about sickle cell disease. For example, you will be asked questions about knowledge, such as 鈥淭rue or False. Sickle cell disease can be inherited if one parent has the trait and the other parent does not.鈥�

Questions about perceptions may include, for example, 鈥淲ho gets sickle cell disease?鈥�

 Lastly, questions about attitudes, for example will ask how strongly do you agree or disagree that 鈥淗aving a child with sickle cell disease would be very scary?鈥�
