Two years after the successful launch of 成人头条鈥檚 Bachelor of Applied Arts (BAA) in Media Arts program, the university has created the new School of Digital Arts.

WSU adds biomedical engineering Ph.D.

As nationwide demand for biomedical engineers continues to grow, 成人头条 is moving forward with a plan to create a doctoral program that would help fill that need.

The new Ph.D. in biomedical engineering was approved by the Kansas Board of Regents Wednesday, Nov. 20.

The Ph.D. will be housed in the Biomedical Engineering Department. The program seeks to provide students with a fundamental understanding of the application of engineering principles and biomedical research with an emphasis on inter-disciplinary research.

Graduate School temporarily moved to 113 Hubbard Hall

A cracked sewer pipe has resulted in the Graduate School temporarily relocating to 113 Hubbard Hall. It鈥檚 likely the Graduate School will be in this temporary location until early-to-mid January. 


Today's (Friday, Nov. 22) parking lot closures

There are several parking lot closures today (Friday, Nov. 22). Portions of lots 24 and 25 off of 17th Street and 35s, the green and yellow lot on the east side of the John Bardo Center, will be closed. In addition, all of lot 16s next to Duerksen Fine Arts Center will be closed for both the Wise Engineering Competition and the School of Business Clay Barton Endowed Scholarship event.


Geology professor to present research based on GIS technology and remote sensing data

Zelalem Demissie will present a description of his work using Geographical Information System (GIS) as a preview to his GIS course offered in the spring semester 2020 at 1:30 p.m. today (Friday, Nov. 22) in Room 101 of the Geology Department.

All are invited to hear 鈥淭he Spatial Likelihood for the Occurrence of Landslide in Oklahoma,鈥 and the application of GIS using remote sensing data in geology.


Ulrich FUN series

Ulrich Museum hosts FUN series showcasing innovative research across campus

The Ulrich Museum of Art invites you to join us for PechaKucha style presentations of campus-wide research today (Friday, Nov. 22) from 4-5 p.m. Presenters get seven minutes each to share their research projects. This program is an extension of the museum's "Solving for X" series, sharing research across campus with the community. Scheduled to present at the event are:

Charles Koeber, associate professor of sociology, whose presentation is titled "Greensburg Reimagined!: The Importance of 'Consumptive' Labor in Disaster Recovery."

Mythili Menon, assistant professor of English and linguistics, "The Relationship between Language and Music."

M. Jason Vandecreek, special projects research associate, Community Engagement Institute, "The Democratization of Data-Informed Decision Making and Communication Arts."

Kansas Dance Festival

WSU Dance hosts 2019 Kansas Dance Festival

Greetings from WSU Dance and welcome to the Kansas Dance Festival 2019! The festival will light up Wilner Auditorium tonight (Friday, Nov. 22) and Saturday, Nov. 23 at 7:30 p.m.

Like a gathering of the tribes, dancers from around the region annually descend on the WSU campus to present original choreography from their university programs. They share the stage with us for an evening performance that is best described as eclectic, diverse and dynamic. These poet athletes reach deep inside themselves to breathe life into work they have rehearsed for months. It lives as you watch, and then it is gone. WSU Dance would like to thank the programs who are visiting for their contributions: Oklahoma University, University of Missouri/Kansas City, Friends University, Barton Community College and Regina Klenjoski Dance Company.

Tickets are range from $10-$15, and WSU students get in free with their university I.D.

NSE allows undergraduate, domestic students the opportunity to study at one of nearly 200 universities across the United States and Canada 鈥 while paying regular WSU tuition and earning credit toward your degree. Beat stress with Beat Saber

Beat Saber is a virtual reality rhythm game that features the player slicing blocks representing musical beats with a pair of red and blue light sabers, and takes place in a surrealistic neon-noir environment. This application is available on both HTC Vive and Oculus Rift at C-Space, Ablah Library.

Voting is live to choose who will serve on the 2020 Homecoming Royalty Court! This initial round of voting is to determine the top five King and top five Queen candidates from the outstanding Shocker seniors who were nominated. Accessed via myWSU, today is the last day for WSU students vote.

The Homecoming Royalty Court and theme will be announced the first week of December, so be sure to follow @shockerhoco on Twitter, and check  to stay up-to-date!

Carbon footprint under scope as sustainability efforts continue

成人头条 is in the middle of a six-part sustainability plan to develop and promote initiatives leading to a greater use of resources on campus. The initiatives revolve around facility improvements, new curriculum opportunities and overall student impact. The second goal of these efforts is to focus on reducing the carbon footprint on campus.

Holiday prescription refills fall 2019

Prescription refill notice from Student Health Services

Student Health Services reminds students that the office will be closed Thursday, Nov. 28, and Friday, Nov. 29 for Thanksgiving. Please submit refill prescriptions by 5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26, for pick up by 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27.

If you need a prescription refilled before the winter break, please submit refill prescriptions by 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 12, for pick up by 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13.

Student Health Services will close on Monday, Dec. 16, and reopen Monday, Jan. 6, in the new Student Wellness Center.

University update

PRESIDENT-ELECT GOLDEN ANNOUNCES CONVERGENT SCIENCES INITIATIVE

President-elect Jay Golden, Provost Rick Muma and VP for Research and Economic Development John Tomblin are asking deans and faculty to undertake a new initiative: The President鈥檚 Convergent Sciences Initiative. 

鈥淭hrough this initiative,鈥 they wrote in a letter to campus, 鈥渨e aim to empower our faculty to explore opportunities to bring together colleagues who span the disciplines and form convergent science research clusters to address some of our most pressing and opportunistic challenges.

鈥淲e want WSU to move to the forefront in developing a new generation of researchers and scholars to address the complex challenges and opportunities changing Kansas and the world. Gaining mastery of this knowledge will help make Kansas a leader in this new economy.鈥

The initial themes are 1) Health Disparities and Health Delivery, 2) Digital Transformation and 3) Open 鈥 for faculty to self-identify.

The initiative will provide each cluster with annual seed funding and will prioritize new faculty hires over a span of multiple years to supplement the research cluster.

President Golden will work with political, industry and community leaders to discuss how investments in these projects can lead to new jobs and industry growth. Leaders will also work with the WSU Foundation to develop external individual, corporate and foundation partners to support this research vision and provide student support in the form of convergent sciences scholarships. 

 

NETAPP POSSIBLE RELOCATION TO INNOVATION CAMPUS

On Monday, Robin Huber, vice president and general manager of NetApp E-Series and site manager of 成人头条 operations, told their employees that the company would like to move into a complex to be built in the next few years in the southeast quadrant of Innovation Campus, near 17th and Oliver.

WSU and NetApp are beginning a process that will include working with city and county government, the Greater 成人头条 Partnership, the Kansas Board of Regents, NetApp employees and members of the campus community to refine the vision and gain support for the project.

成人头条 State representatives have been talking for several months with NetApp鈥檚 leadership about the possibility of having their employees and facilities relocate to Innovation Campus, to work even more closely with WSU students, faculty and other researchers. NetApp, a world leading solutions provider in digital transformation, is already one of the largest employers of our students.

Details are still being worked out. NetApp has a lab on Innovation Campus, uses meeting rooms across campus and is looking forward to expanding its presence.

 

BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING Ph.D. PROGRAM APPROVED

A Ph.D. biomedical engineering was approved by the Kansas Board of Regents on Wednesday.

The Ph.D. will be housed in the Biomedical Engineering Department. The program seeks to provide students with a fundamental understanding of the application of engineering principles to biomedical research with an emphasis on inter-disciplinary research. 

The program takes advantage of 成人头条 State鈥檚 position as the state鈥檚 only major research institution in a metropolitan area, as well as numerous experiential learning collaborations in 成人头条鈥檚 top employment industry sectors: manufacturing and health care.

 

WSU CREATES SCHOOL OF DIGITAL ARTS

Two years after the successful launch of 成人头条 State鈥檚 Bachelor of Applied Arts (BAA) in Media Arts program, the university has created the new School of Digital Arts.

The school will be the fourth school within WSU鈥檚 College of Fine Arts and will encompass the BAA program, which includes concentrations in animation, audio production, filmmaking, game design and collaborative design.

The School of Digital Arts was approved Wednesday by the Kansas Board of Regents.
This new addition to the College of Fine Arts comes on the heels of impressive growth

within the BAA program, which is housed in the state-of-the-art Shocker Studios production facility.

 

UPDATE FOR DRIVERS AND PEDESTRIANS

Drivers and pedestrians should be aware of the recent addition of a crosswalk on 17th Street at Yale. Also, the 成人头条 Police Department and Facility Services are identifying locations on campus to place flashing yellow and red lights at crosswalks. They are solar-operated lights which can be moved to promote safe crossing of streets across campus.

 

HAPPY THANKSGIVING

The last day of classes before the Thanksgiving Recess is Tuesday, Nov. 26. While there are no classes, university offices are open on Wednesday, Nov. 27. The university is closed on Nov. 28-29.

Classes resume on Dec. 2.

TRIO Disability Support Services is enrolling first-generation and limited-income students with disabilities for the academic year. Students may receive free tutoring, advising, scholarship opportunities, and other free resources to help students graduate.

Students, get to Charles Koch Arena early for the basketball game this Saturday, Nov. 23, for a pregame tailgate featuring yard games, drinks and Ziggy's Pizza! Enter through the student entrance by presenting a valid student ticket at 12:20 p.m. The tailgate will take place inside the practice gym to avoid any weather conflicts. Show up, eat some pizza and get ready to ROCK THE BLOCK as the Shockers take on Oral Roberts!

Become part of the new Assistive Technology & Accessible Design Certificate Program

成人头条 State鈥檚 undergraduate certificate in assistive technology and accessible design is an interdisciplinary program useful for any major wanting to create innovations that improve learning, working and daily living for people with disabilities. Students will learn from faculty across campus and work with service providers to design and create products and equipment such as communication boards, specialized learning materials, mounting systems, electronic devices, walkers, pencil holders, screen readers, communication programs and much more. KMUW is accepting applications for the Korva Coleman diversity in Journalism Internship

The KMUW Korva Coleman Internship is geared toward training college students of color to be part of the next generation of public radio reporters and newscasters.

The Coleman intern will get an immersive, hands-on learning experience at KMUW, 成人头条鈥檚 award-winning National Public Radio station, as well as mentoring from NPR newscaster Korva Coleman.

The internship will run for 10 weeks beginning May 26, 2020. The Coleman intern will work 40 hours a week and be paid a $5,000 stipend. They will also receive free room and board.

Outdoor Adventures spring break ski trip registration now open!

Join Campus Recreation's Outdoor Adventures on a trip to beautiful Copper Mountain, located outside of Dillon, Colorado. We will have three full days on the slopes. Mentoring psychology course

Enroll in a service-learning course in psychology

The INSPYRE research lab (directed by Dr. Samantha Gregus) is currently recruiting undergraduate mentors for a 3-hour service-learning course in psychology (PSY 416) for the Spring 2020 semester.

Prior to enrolling in PSY 416 (Psychology and Problems of Society), mentors are required to: Pass an interview and background check, have reliable transportation, lunch availability from 12-2 p.m. at least twice a week and attend class on Mondays from 3:30-6 p.m. 

We have a course syllabus, class readings and paper assignments. Mentors will receive training at the beginning of the course and a grade at the end based on attendance and completion of assignments.
