Sustainability

Carbon footprint under scope as sustainability efforts continue

ͷ is in the middle of a six-part sustainability plan to develop and promote initiatives leading to a greater use of resources on campus. The initiatives revolve around facility improvements, new curriculum opportunities and overall student impact. The second goal of these efforts is to focus on reducing the carbon footprint on campus.

Help us reduce WSU’s carbon footprint; we need your help!

As part of the effort in Sustainability Plan at WSU, we are currently researching the amount of CO2 we are emitting on ͷ. However, we need to obtain data from everyone on campus. It will only take about five-to-10 minutes to fill out the survey.

If you have question, contact Dakota Blair at drblair@shockers.wichita.edu), or Ikram Ahmed at ikram.ahmed@wichita.edu.

The survey response is anonymous. If you have taken the survey before, we would like to express our gratitude. You don't have to fill out the survey again. Help us by .

PRESIDENT-ELECT GOLDEN ANNOUNCES CONVERGENT SCIENCES INITIATIVE

President-elect Jay Golden, Provost Rick Muma and VP for Research and Economic Development John Tomblin are asking deans and faculty to undertake a new initiative: The President’s Convergent Sciences Initiative.

“Through this initiative,” they wrote in a letter to campus, “we aim to empower our faculty to explore opportunities to bring together colleagues who span the disciplines and form convergent science research clusters to address some of our most pressing and opportunistic challenges.

“We want WSU to move to the forefront in developing a new generation of researchers and scholars to address the complex challenges and opportunities changing Kansas and the world. Gaining mastery of this knowledge will help make Kansas a leader in this new economy.”

The initial themes are 1) Health Disparities and Health Delivery, 2) Digital Transformation and 3) Open – for faculty to self-identify.

The initiative will provide each cluster with annual seed funding and will prioritize new faculty hires over a span of multiple years to supplement the research cluster.

President Golden will work with political, industry and community leaders to discuss how investments in these projects can lead to new jobs and industry growth. Leaders will also work with the WSU Foundation to develop external individual, corporate and foundation partners to support this research vision and provide student support in the form of convergent sciences scholarships.

NETAPP POSSIBLE RELOCATION TO INNOVATION CAMPUS

On Monday, Robin Huber, vice president and general manager of NetApp E-Series and site manager of ͷ operations, told their employees that the company would like to move into a complex to be built in the next few years in the southeast quadrant of Innovation Campus, near 17th and Oliver.

WSU and NetApp are beginning a process that will include working with city and county government, the Greater ͷ Partnership, the Kansas Board of Regents, NetApp employees and members of the campus community to refine the vision and gain support for the project.

ͷ State representatives have been talking for several months with NetApp’s leadership about the possibility of having their employees and facilities relocate to Innovation Campus, to work even more closely with WSU students, faculty and other researchers. NetApp, a world leading solutions provider in digital transformation, is already one of the largest employers of our students.

Details are still being worked out. NetApp has a lab on Innovation Campus, uses meeting rooms across campus and is looking forward to expanding its presence.
