Dr. Yu's research interests involve the following areas:

• Cyber Security: risk assessment and social engineering 
• Cyber Intelligence: SOCMINT/OSMINT (multi-lingual) and cyber profiling
• Computer Forensics: evidence discovery and counter-forensics
• Social Media: deviant subcultures and cognitive warfare
• Criminological Theory: labeling, learning, and containment 
• Investigation: missing persons and digital investigation 
• Artificial Intelligence: open source tools and deepfake 

Showcase:

1. In Spring 2024,  two students with computer science majors successfully completed their STEM project under Dr. Yu's mentorship. Their AI models were able to detect AI-generated photos with accuracy rates ranging from 90% to 100%.
