The questionnaires the instructors filled out assessed student performance in nine different categories, which can be grouped under the following more general headings: cognitive achievement (the ability to identify and distinguish among major genres, literary terms, and distinct periods in English and American literary history); analytical ability (the ability to analyze and read critically literary texts, to understand how literary works are put together to reach their audience at the level of thought and feeling ); and discursive skill (the ability to discuss and write about literature with clarity and sophistication). The results of the assessment are generally encouraging, as the data compiled indicate. Using a 10-point scale as a framework, the aggregated surveys indicated that 98% of students were rated above the mid-point, while 90% scored 7 or higher in most categories. Students were seen as particularly strong in identifying the parts of a literary text and somewhat less strong at genre-identification. This result is not particularly surprising, given the modern theoretical practice of calling traditional genre-classifications into question. Future assessments will be devoted to determining how well students believe they have retained the skills and knowledge they have gained and will thus provide an interesting comparison with present assessment results. For now, we are satisfied that students are learning under the system we have in place and do not contemplate making significant changes either in curriculum or teaching methods. @An p V [ \ 0 bcehGBh%JhB+hAh=h[3AB9 : cde 21h:p=/ =!"#$% j 666666666vvvvvvvvv666666>6666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666hH6666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666662 0@P`p2( 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p8XV~ OJPJQJ_HmH nH sH tH @`@ =NormalCJ_HaJmH sH tH DA D Default Paragraph FontRiR 0 Table Normal4 l4a (k ( 0No List PK![Content_Types].xmlj0Eжr(΢Iw},-j4 wP-t#bΙ{UTU^hd}㨫)*1P' ^W0)T9<l#$yi};~@(Hu* Dנz/0ǰ $ X3aZ,D0j~3߶b~i>3\`?/[G\!-Rk.sԻ..a濭?PK!֧6 _rels/.relsj0 }Q%v/C/}(h"O = C?hv=Ʌ%[xp{۵_Pѣ<1H0ORBdJE4b$q_6LR7`0̞O,En7Lib/SeеPK!kytheme/theme/themeManager.xml M @}w7c(EbˮCAǠҟ7՛K Y, e.|,H,lxɴIsQ}#Ր ֵ+!,^$j=GW)E+& 8PK!Ptheme/theme/theme1.xmlYOo6w toc'vuر-MniP@I}úama[إ4:lЯGRX^6؊>$ !)O^rC$y@/yH*񄴽)޵߻UDb`}"qۋJחX^)I`nEp)liV[]1M<OP6r=zgbIguSebORD۫qu gZo~ٺlAplxpT0+[}`jzAV2Fi@qv֬5\|ʜ̭NleXdsjcs7f W+Ն7`g ȘJj|h(KD- dXiJ؇(x$( :;˹!
