Watershed and Flood Prevention Operations Program

The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) provides technical and financial assistance to help Federal, State and Local governments, and their political subdivisions, work together to protect watersheds and prevent flooding.

About

The Watershed and Flood Prevention Operations Program is an NRCS program that strives to restore watersheds and prevent floods on watersheds up to 250,000 acres. The program provides technical assistance to facilitate cooperation between Federal, state and local governments and their political subdivision to:

  • Prevent erosion
  • Reduce floodwater and sediment damage
  • Further conservation development
  • Improve use and disposal of water
  • Encourage the proper use of land in authorized watersheds

Projects can include land treatment, structural solutions, construction, etc.

A watershed plan must be in place prior to project implementation. Once a watershed plan is in place, the project sponsor helps landowners install planned treatments. Benefits must be directly related to agriculture, including rural communities, and account for at least 20% of the total benefits for the project.
