FYRE | Oct 10
The First Year Research Experience ((FYRE) is open to new WSU students from all majors.
Through a competitive application process students are matched with ongoing research
projects led by WSU professors in numerous STEM disciplines. Selected students will
participate in active laboratory research for 8-10 hours per week, culminating in
a poster presentation about their work.
The FYRE applications are due October 10th with interviews and selection occurring in November. Students earn 3 hours of Honors
credit and a letter grade for successful completion of FYRE in the Spring 2024 semester.

Come Attend the WSU Wellness Initiative | Oct 11
All are invited to a WSU Wellness Initiative launch and lunch from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.
Wednesday, Oct. 11 in the Woolsey Hall auditorium. Help 成人头条 State lead in the
promotion of community wellness both on and off campus!
Lunch will be provided by the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs. Attendees
will also get Suspenders4Hope gear at no additional charge.

Interest in Seeing the Film "Killers of the Flower Moon"? | Nov
The Cohen Honors College is sponsoring a film screening of the film 鈥淜illers of the
Flower Moon鈥� for Native American Heritage month in November.
鈥淎t the turn of the 20th century, oil brought a fortune to the Osage Nation, who became
some of the richest people in the world overnight. The wealth of these Native Americans
immediately attracted white interlopers, who manipulated, extorted and stole as much
Osage money as they could before resorting to murder. Based on a true story and told
through the improbable romance of Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Mollie Kyle
(Lily Gladstone), 鈥淜illers of the Flower Moon鈥� is an epic western crime saga, where
real love crosses paths with unspeakable betrayal. Also starring Robert De Niro and
Jesse Plemons, 鈥淜illers of the Flower Moon鈥� is directed by Academy Award winner Martin
Scorsese from a screenplay by Eric Roth and Martin Scorsese, based on David Grann鈥檚

Honors Collaborative Research | HNRS 486 | CRN 22829
When: Tuesdays and Thursdays 9:30-10:45
Who: Dr. Gary Brooking
This course is designed to expose students majoring in various disciplines to an opportunity
to meet and invite collaborations that cultivate an interdisciplinary research experience.
Students discuss best practice in academic research and research ethics and learn
of complementary approaches to research in different subject areas.
Survey of Leadership | HNRS 351 | CRN 23723
When: Tuesdays and Thursdays 2:00-3:15
Who: Dr. Chelsea Redger-Marquardt
The main leadership theories and a history of leadership thought are presented, leadership
perspectives are debated, and examples of leadership in various contexts are discussed.
After completing the seminar students should be able to recognize the main leadership
theories, identify different leadership perspectives, recognize applications of leadership,
and understand the benefits and challenges of leadership.
Community and Cultural Connections First Year Seminar | WSUN 102I | CRN 25530
When: Tuesdays and Thursdays 11:00-12:15
Who: Dr. Kevin Harrison
This course reviews historical events and contemporary headlines, and engages students
in courageous conversations as means of inspiring them to think critically about race
and its role in society. Though the course discusses the popular yet controversial Black
Lives Matter (BLM) movement that inspires its title, it spends more time looking at
BLM as a statement that describes the sentiment of many Blacks that their lives are insignificant in the eyes of mainstream America.
History of Genocide Past and Present | HNRS 305 | CRN 24884
When: Tuesdays and Thursdays 11:00-12:15
Who: Keith Pickus
Examines the multifaceted causes of genocide in the 20th and 21st centuries. Among
the topics covered are the historical roots and definitions of genocide and how groups
defined as "others" or "outsiders" are targeted for extermination. Central concepts
discussed are the development of exclusionary national identities, the role of political
leadership and the means by which genocidal violence unfolds.

Tilford Conference at Washburn University | Oct 5-6
The Michael Tilford Conference provides a platform for the education world, business
leaders, and the community, to examine diversity in education and business by exploring
various challenges and opportunities. The conference travels to every state university
plus Washburn and spends two consecutive years at each. This year鈥檚 conference is
year two for Washburn University, then it will come to 成人头条 State for the 2024
and 2025 conference years. In the spirit of diversity in education and the history
of Topeka, Kansas, this year鈥檚 theme (Living into Brown: Staying the Course Toward
Inclusion and Belonging) aligns well with the current state of diversity in education
while also celebrating the history of the 1954 Brown v. BOE supreme court decision.
With amazing sessions and keynote speakers, including Cheryl Brown Henderson (daughter
of the late Oliver Brown of Brown v. BOE) this year鈥檚 conference is certainly one
to attend.
