Earlier This Week

Honors Induction | Sept 23

Approximately 325 students, family members, friends, and faculty gathered for the 2023 Honors Induction welcoming new students into the Cohen Honors College. Each year we invite inducted students to uphold the four Honors pillars, to be intellectual, professional, innovative, and transformational. Each year, we acknowledge that the work, ideas, and aspirations of new students recreate who we are in Honors.

A big thank you to all of the new students who attended and student volunteers who gave their time to make the ceremony and the reception so much fun! Special thanks to Dorothy Cohen for her words about the importance of making this commitment to Honors and a commitment to building the future.

Poem of the Week | Excerpt from "The Origin Revisited" by Ada Limon

摆鈥
How do you know you鈥檙e alive? What evidence
will you leave? So many myths

are unraveling; a yellow swallowtail glides by over
the sinless creek bed. A storm

wets the skin and we are surprised we have
skin. Woods鈥 rose, white-flowered rhododendron,

nothing here is unfinished. What it gave me? I saw
a new tree emerge out of a ground made of ancient trees

on top of more ancient trees, on top of more ancient trees,
on top of more ancient trees, and understood then

that this was how the Earth was made

Ada Lim贸n is the author of six books of poetry, including The Carrying, which won the National Book Critics Circle Award for Poetry. Her most recent book is The Hurting Kind. She is the 24th Poet Laureate of the United States.
