Course Learning Objectives:

  • Covers the introductory topics pertaining to the background, applications, materials, processes, and benefits of Additive Manufacturing (AM).
  • Provides basic level information of additive manufacturing workflows, terminology, standards, and the computer-aided design (CAD) skills required to create a simple 3D part.
  • Get a first-hand experience on how to print a part on a prosumer grade Prusa 3D printer by incorporating the 3D printing workflow which comprises of modeling, STL file generation, slicing, printing, and post-processing.

Course Topics:

  • Module 1 鈥 Introduction to AM
    Additive manufacturing definition, AM history, pros and cons of 3d printing, 3D printing vs. traditional manufacturing, cost comparison: AM vs. traditional manufacturing,    AM workflow, applications of AM, 3D printing materials, 3D printing processes, emerging/advanced AM technologies.
  • Module 2 鈥 Additive Manufacturing Glossary
    General terms, process categories, key terminology, data / file formats, standard definitions associated with material processing, material extrusion, powder bed fusion, applications, properties, and evaluation.
  • Module 3 鈥 Additive Manufacturing Workflow
    Terminology recap, AM workflow overview, pre-processing, processing, post-processing.
  • Module 4 鈥 Basic CAD Training for AM
    3DEXPERIENCE(3DE) software, CATIA 3DE applications, user interface, sketcher, part design workbench/tools, CAD model for Prusa 3D printing.
  • Module 5 鈥 3D Printing for Hobbyist
    About Prusa research, anatomy of Prusa, Prusa printing guide, Prusa 3D printing workflow, Prusa slicer software, troubleshooting and 3D printing exercises.
  • Module 6 鈥 Additive Manufacturing Standards
    AM standardization, ISO/ASTM standards and their association, reading AM standards, standard development process, how to find a standard.

Course Outcomes:

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Define 3D printing.
  • Distinguish between 3D printing (AM) and conventional manufacturing processes.
  • List the various materials and processes compatible with AM machines.
  • Describe the capabilities of 3D printing machines.
  • Understand the basic terms and definitions associated with AM.
  • Identify the relevant abbreviations of AM.
  • Recognize the 7 AM Process Categories as specified by ASTM.
  • Understand the tasks and purposes associated with each step of the AM workflow.
  • Create a 3D model using a best-in-class modeling tool (CATIA on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform)
  • Apply the steps of the 3D printing workflow on a Prusa 3D printer and manufacture a simple 3D printed part.
  • Understand the importance of standards.
  • Identify AM standards development organizations (SDO) agencies.
  • Know how to find and read standards.
  • Outline the standard development stages.
