Course Learning Objectives:
- Covers the introductory topics pertaining to the background, applications, materials, processes, and benefits of Additive Manufacturing (AM).
- Provides basic level information of additive manufacturing workflows, terminology, standards, and the computer-aided design (CAD) skills required to create a simple 3D part.
- Get a first-hand experience on how to print a part on a prosumer grade Prusa 3D printer by incorporating the 3D printing workflow which comprises of modeling, STL file generation, slicing, printing, and post-processing.

Course Outcomes:
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Define 3D printing.
- Distinguish between 3D printing (AM) and conventional manufacturing processes.
- List the various materials and processes compatible with AM machines.
- Describe the capabilities of 3D printing machines.
- Understand the basic terms and definitions associated with AM.
- Identify the relevant abbreviations of AM.
- Recognize the 7 AM Process Categories as specified by ASTM.
- Understand the tasks and purposes associated with each step of the AM workflow.
- Create a 3D model using a best-in-class modeling tool (CATIA on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform)
- Apply the steps of the 3D printing workflow on a Prusa 3D printer and manufacture a simple 3D printed part.
- Understand the importance of standards.
- Identify AM standards development organizations (SDO) agencies.
- Know how to find and read standards.
- Outline the standard development stages.
