Professor of Viola, Chamber Music, Managing Performance Stress
Catherine Consiglio is Professor of Viola at 成人头条, a member of the Fairmount String Trio and Principal Viola in the 成人头条 Symphony Orchestra. Consiglio's degrees include a MM from the New England Conservatory, where she was assistant to renowned pedagogue Heidi Castleman. Teachers include Jeffrey Irvine and Eugene Lehner, violist with the legendary Kolish Quartet. Ms. Consiglio has also taught at Rice University, the University of Connecticut, University of Oklahoma, and Phillips Academy in Boston. Former orchestral playing positions include: Principal Violist of the Oklahoma Symphony, Boston Philharmonic, New England Chamber Orchestra, Orchesta Sinfonia de Jalapa, and Assistant Principal of the Houston Chamber Orchestra. Ms. Consiglio has taught and performed at festivals across the United States, Mexico, and Europe, including the Evian Music Festival in France, The Quartet Program and Killington Music Festival in the United States. She has been a guest violist with the Harrington and Pro Arte String Quartets. Ms. Consiglio has performed hundreds of concerts throughout the Mid West with the Fairmount String Quartet. The FSQ is on the Kansas Arts Commission Touring Roster, and the resident String Trio for WSU. They play children鈥檚 concerts, formal recitals and participate in community residencies regularly throughout the year.
During 2005 and 2006 Ms. Consiglio headed a project to take WSU chamber music into the public schools. Approximately 21 college students played to multiple classes at over 10 area schools, reaching out with the language of chamber music to hundreds of teenagers.
In 2007 and 2008 Ms. Consiglio鈥檚 technique book for violists has been requested for use at The Julliard School and The Julliard Preparatory Division and is published through WSU.
Ms. Consiglio has received two of the three WSU College of Fine Arts Excellence in Achievement Awards. In 1994 she was awarded the Excellence in Teaching Award, in 2003 she received the Excellence in Special Fine Arts Endeavors Award and in August of 2007 she was awarded the Anita Jones Faculty Fellowship by the Dean of the College of Fine Arts. In 2008 the Board and Musicians of the 成人头条 Symphony Orchestra gave the prestigious Daniel J. Sevart Award for Community Service to Ms. Consiglio for her work with Chamber Music at the Barn.
Consiglio was co-founder and Artistic Director of Chamber Music at the Barn in 成人头条. CMATB presented 15 chamber music concerts and supported four educational music camps during the summer months through 2021.
Ms. Consiglio鈥檚 students are teaching and performing in orchestras, colleges, and public schools all over the United States. Her students have performed and participated in the 2008 International Viola Congress, Aspen Music Festival, Spoleto USA and Italy, Hot Springs Music Festival, National Orchestral Institute, and many others.
Orchestral playing positions of Ms. Consiglio鈥檚 students include the Chicago Civic Orchestra, Eugene Symphony, Oklahoma Philharmonic, Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, Alabama Symphony, and the Minnesota Orchestra. Teaching positions achieved by her students include Pasadena Conservatory, Luther College, Northern Arizona University, and the University of Alabama. Many of her viola students have gone on to achieve additional degrees and further study at The Julliard School, Cleveland Institute of Music, Southern Methodist University, and the University of Minnesota.
