Congratulations to those who received grants in July!    Thanks to all of their talents and hard work, as of July 31, 2022, WSU researchers under Academic Affairs have submitted proposals budgeting a total of $11,747,988, received $2,058,976 in awards, and generated $348,267 in indirect cost recovery for FY2023.  

The final numbers for FY2022 for Academic Affairs鈥 researchers are:  $128,293,038 budgeted in submitted proposals, $40,954,009 in awards received, and $3,526,868 generated in indirect cost recovery.

Funding Agency: Corning Museum of Glass

Title:

Purpose: 鈥淭he museum invites applications for its Black, Indigenous, and people of color residency program. Artists spend a month at The Studio exploring new directions in glassmaking or expanding on their current bodies of work while using the immense resources of the world鈥檚 leading glass museum. Transportation, as well as room and board, is provided for those selected to participate. Each resident is offered a generous supply budget and a shared studio space. Residents can access the Rakow Research Library, The Corning Museum of Glass collection, and expert Museum staff. A residency manager will serve as liaison to additional services in Corning and the Museum.  During the residency, artists are expected to do their work. Each artist presents their work during a free public event in The Studio Lecture Room. Residencies occur in March, April, May, October, and November. One or two individuals are selected for each month.鈥

The goal is to fund applicants who will go on to be independent investigators. The Fund is open to a wide variety of research topics. We do not focus on a particular 鈥媎isease, but all our funded projects deal directly with children's health.  In the Early Career Award Program, the Fund is particularly interested in applicants that show great potential to impact that field of children's health through medical research. Both an applicant's aptitude and inclination toward research are considered. The quality of the mentor and the mentoring relationship are also considered to be important predictors of success.鈥

Purpose: 鈥淭he Resident Faculty Scholar Grant Program will support a faculty member, or small groups of faculty members, at institutions in the United States or Canada, to utilize BWF Headquarters as a site for mini-sabbaticals/project incubation allowing the dedicated protected time to initiate or accelerate their work when aligned with BWF priorities and goals. The nature of the mini-sabbaticals/project incubation sessions will be quite flexible and would be envisioned to support work at the BWF Headquarters for two to 6 months. Funds would be available to support travel, lodging, meetings, and faculty salary. We anticipate two proposals to be awarded in the first year of applications. Office space, computer access, meeting facilities and other dry laboratory resources would be available on site.  We encourage all stages of seniority of faculty to apply.鈥

With this solicitation, the National Science Foundation focuses on re-envisioning how to teach computing effectively to a broad group of students, in a scalable manner, with an emphasis on broadening participation of groups who are underrepresented and underserved by traditional computing courses and careers. Purpose: 鈥淣AF research grants are for new and innovative studies that are relevant to the cause, pathogenesis or treatment of the hereditary or sporadic ataxias.  Research grants are offered primarily as 鈥渟eed monies鈥 to assist investigators in the early or pilot phase of their studies and as additional support for ongoing investigations on demonstration of need. Funding Agency: Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI)

Title:

Application Deadline: Letter of Intent due October 4, 2022

Purpose: 鈥淲ith this PCORI Funding Announcement (PFA), PCORI aims to fund studies that address high-priority methodological gaps in patient-centered outcomes research (PCOR) and clinical comparative effectiveness research (CER).  PCORI seeks to fund projects that address important methodological gaps and lead to improvements in the strength and quality of evidence generated by PCOR/CER studies.  For the 2022 Methods PFA, PCORI has identified the following areas as programmatic priorities: 1) Methods to Improve the Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) in Clinical Research, 2) Methods to Improve Study Design, 3) Methods to Support Data Research Networks and 4) Methods Related to Ethical and Human Subjects Protections Issues in PCOR/CER.鈥 

Amount: $750,000 in direct costs over three years

Purpose: 鈥淭he Environmental Justice Thriving Communities Technical Assistance Centers (EJ TCTAC) Program provides grant funding to eligible applicants to establish technical assistance centers across the nation providing technical assistance, training, and related support to communities with environmental justice concerns and their partners. The new technical assistance centers will provide training, assistance, and capacity building on writing grant proposals, navigating federal systems such as Grants.gov and SAM.gov, and effectively managing grant funding. These centers will also provide guidance on community engagement, meeting facilitation, and translation and interpretation services for limited English-speaking participants.鈥  Please let the WSU Environmental Finance Center (Tonya Bronleewe, Director) know if you are interested in collaborating on a proposal.

Purpose: 鈥淪ystems for Action (S4A) is a signature research program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) that helps to build the evidence base for a Culture of Health by rigorously testing new ways of connecting the nation鈥檚 fragmented medical, social, and public health systems. New strategies and tools are needed to help medical, social, and public health systems work together to dismantle structural racism and improve health and well-being for all.鈥

Title:

Purpose: 鈥淭he National Historical Publications and Records Commission seeks projects that encourage public engagement with historical records, including the development of new tools that enable people to engage online. The NHPRC is looking for collaborative projects that create models and technologies that other institutions can freely adopt. In general, collaborations between archivists, documentary editors, historians, educators, and/or community-based individuals are more likely to create a competitive proposal. Projects that focus on innovative methods to introduce primary source materials and how to use them in multiple locations also are more likely to create a competitive proposal.鈥

Purpose: 鈥淭his solicitation invites proposals for the creation of international networks of networks in research areas aligned with a grand challenge identified as a priority by the research community or NSF, such as the NSF Big Ideas or in an active program solicitation.  AccelNet awards support the connections among research networks, rather than supporting fundamental research as the primary activity.  Each network of networks is expected to engage in innovative collaborative activities that promote synergy of efforts across networks and provide professional development for U.S. students, postdoctoral scholars, and early-career researchers. Two proposal categories covered by this solicitation include: Design and Implementation.鈥

Title:

Purpose: 鈥淭he goal of the NIDCR Career Enhancement Award (K18) is to support mentored research experiences for established investigators who either wish to expand or augment their dental, oral, or craniofacial (DOC) research program, or to redirect their research by incorporating DOC research into their research program to advance fundamental knowledge about dental, oral, and craniofacial health and disease.鈥

Amount: NIH will contribute $25,000 per year toward the research development costs of the award recipient, which must be justified and consistent with the stage of development of the candidate and the proportion of time to be spent in research or career development activities. Allowable costs include tuition and fees for short-term courses, travel to scientific meetings or training, consultant fees, and research-related costs, primarily supplies and technical or computational services. Salary for research assistants, laboratory technicians, or equivalent research staff may be appropriate.  Salary for mentors, secretarial and administrative assistants, etc. is not allowed.

Purpose: 鈥淭he purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to support studies that will identify, develop, and/or test strategies for overcoming barriers to the adoption, adaptation, integration, scale-up, and sustainability of evidence-based interventions, practices, programs, tools, treatments, guidelines, and policies. Studies that promote equitable dissemination and implementation of evidence-based interventions among underrepresented communities are encouraged. Conversely, there is a benefit in understanding circumstances that create a need to stop or reduce (鈥渄e-implement鈥) the use of practices that are ineffective, unproven, low-value, or harmful. In addition, studies to advance dissemination and implementation research methods and measures are encouraged. Applications that focus on re-implementation of evidence-based health services (e.g. cancer screening) that may have dropped off amidst the ongoing COVID pandemic are encouraged.鈥

Amount: The combined budget for direct costs for the two-year project period may not exceed $275,000. No more than $200,000 may be requested in a single year. The maximum project period is two years.

The Sphinx Venture Fund provides grants to individuals or organizations for initiatives designed to solve a challenge or an issue related to diversity, equality, and inclusion in the performing arts, with a strong emphasis on classical music. The focus is on new and innovative solutions that have the opportunity to have a transformative impact for the entire field, go beyond a single geographic area, and involve more than one partner.鈥

Amount: A small number of proposals will be selected each year with an average grant size of $50,000 to $100,000.

Purpose: 鈥淭he National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) is soliciting proposals to conserve and restore grasslands and wildlife species in the Southern Great Plains. The Southern Plains Grassland Program seeks to work closely with nonprofit and government partners and the ranching community to bring important financial and technical resources to improve grassland ecosystem health and resilience to climate change in the Southern Great Plains. These actions will boost the vitality of this often-overlooked ecosystem, providing benefits to wildlife and to rural, ranching-based communities. These actions increase the ability of grasslands to store carbon, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and provide key benefits to address climate change.鈥

Amount: The Southern Plains Grassland Program will award approximately $1.5 million this cycle to 10-15 grants. Grants may be up to three years in length.  Note, 1:1 match is required.

Purpose: 鈥淭his Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) seeks to accelerate the clinical translation of novel biomaterials for dental, oral, and craniofacial (DOC) applications through development and implementation of advanced data-driven tools designed to overcome critical bottlenecks in research and development (R&D) cycles that lead to delays in regulatory evaluations and translation to human use. A primary focus of this initiative is the acceleration of R&D cycles and the regulatory evaluation of novel and/or repurposed biomaterial formulations with unique functional properties optimized for the restoration, repair, or replacement of DOC tissues. The framework of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) Medical Device Development Tools (MDDT) program will be leveraged by this initiative as an innovative and important roadmap to guide the development of data-driven tools that are qualified by the FDA for a specific Context of Use (CoU).鈥

Amount: Application budgets in the R61 phase are limited to $200,000 in direct costs per year. Application budgets in the R33 phase should not exceed $750,000 in direct costs per year.

We are especially interested in research that examines the roles of race, ethnicity, nativity, gender and legal status in outcomes for immigrants, U.S.-born racial and ethnic minorities, and native-born whites.  RSF encourages multi-disciplinary perspectives and methods that both strengthen the data, theory, and methods of social science research and foster a better understanding of how to foster the ideals of a pluralist society. Purpose: 鈥淭he Allergic Respiratory Diseases Award is a long-standing joint effort between the American Lung Association and the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology to encourage and support early-stage investigators with a primary faculty appointment in an allergy/immunology division or section, to conduct research into advancing the understanding of allergic respiratory disease.  The Innovation Award will support promising independent investigators who are leveraging their existing body of work to conduct basic science, behavioral, clinical, or translational research for lung health. The Catalyst Award champions the next generation of scientists who are ascending toward independence by supporting mentored-investigators who are conducting basic science, behavioral, clinical or translational research into lung health.  The Public Policy Research award is designed to help stimulate and inform important public policy debates around healthy air and lung disease. This award supports research on and evaluation of existing public policy and programs, as well as projects that inject innovative ideas into public policies impacting lung health.  This is a mentored award meant to provide seed monies to junior investigators for researching the mechanisms and biology of interstitial lung disease.鈥

Learn to Use BeoShock for your Advanced Research Computing Needs

成人头条 continues to host Beoshock, a High-performance Computing Cluster (HPC). This HPC is available and free to faculty members, researchers and students engaged in course work or research activities. BeoShock runs the CentOS Linux operating system and features approximately 720 processor cores, two high memory compute nodes with 1.5 terabytes of memory, and four graphics processing unit (GPU) accelerators. BeoShock also has a variety of software tools that may be helpful in your research endeavors, such as Matlab, Mathematica, R, Python and many more.

Office of Research EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT 鈥 Jana Henderson

Jana E. Henderson joined the Office of Research in 2014 and was promoted to serve as the Associate Director for the Pre-Award team in 2021.  The Pre-Award team supports researchers and public service centers under Academic Affairs by assisting with proposal submissions and contract negotiations, while also providing administrative support for the Faculty Support Committee, Institutional Review Board and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. 

Jana obtained her Bachelor of Business Administration degree from WSU in 2007 and started working for WSU in 2008.  She started in the Office for Workforce, Professional and Community Education before transitioning to the Office of Research.  She enjoys working with her team to support faculty and staff in growing WSU鈥檚 research and service portfolio.  Outside of work, Jana enjoys going to church and volunteering at various events, such as WSU鈥檚 commencement ceremonies.  She also has a very close-knit family with whom she enjoys spending her time, many of whom are also part of Shocker Nation!  Read more about the Office of Research staff鈥

鈥淭he purpose of this notice is to inform the extramural research community of implementation details for the NIH Policy for Data Management and Sharing (DMS Policy) affecting grant and cooperative agreement applications submitted for receipt dates on or after January 25, 2023.  The DMS Policy applies to all NIH research, funded or conducted in whole or in part by NIH, that results in the generation of scientific data. The DMS Policy does not apply to research and other activities that do not generate scientific data.鈥  A is available. 

 

 

National Institutes of Health (NIH) Notice of Special Interest (NOSI): Research on Addressing Violence to Improve Health Outcomes

鈥淭he purpose of this Notice is to highlight interest in addressing the role of violence in health outcomes and integrating violence-related screening and interventions into health care settings. This Notice is to encourage intervention research focused on addressing exposure to violence - including but not limited to child maltreatment, intimate partner violence/teen dating violence, elder mistreatment, peer violence/bullying, and community violence 鈥 to improve individual-level health processes and outcomes.鈥

 

 

NICHB Notice of Upcoming Prize Competition Announcement for the RADx庐 Tech for Maternal Health Challenge

鈥淎s part of the Implementing a Maternal health and Pregnancy Outcomes Vision for Everyone (IMPROVE) initiative, the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), intends to publish an announcement to invite entries for a prize competition: The Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics Technology (RADx庐 Tech) for Maternal Health Challenge.   The RADx Tech for Maternal Health Challenge aims to accelerate the development of home-based and point-of-care maternal health diagnostic devices, wearables, or other remote sensing technologies to enable extension of care and ultimately reduce severe maternal morbidity and maternal mortality (SMM/MM) for individuals residing in maternity care deserts.  This Notice is being provided to inform potential Innovators of the upcoming opportunity to compete in the RADx Tech for Maternal Health Challenge. Publication of the Challenge announcement and launch of the submission portal are planned for September 1, 2022. The estimated submission deadline is November 1, 2022.鈥
