Community-based organizations can apply for a $100,000 grant over two-year ($50,000 per year) to bolster their patient navigation efforts. Applicants that utilize best practices, have established community partnerships and are addressing health disparities in their community or practice will be prioritized.鈥

Purpose: 鈥淟ead the future of innovation at your higher education institution with the VentureWell Ecosystem Futures Fellowship. This new fellowship is an evolution of our Course & Program Grants that focuses on scalable science, technology, engineering, and math innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem solutions through the lens of environmental and social sustainability and inclusive innovation. This program offers professional development, immersive learning experiences, and a supportive community of leaders. It enhances the role of faculty and higher education leaders as ecosystem builders in partnership with industry and government.鈥

Amount: $10,000 with $15,000 in travel stipends

Purpose: 鈥淪upports foundational research addressing the substantial environmental impacts of computing. Projects should surpass studies of energy efficiency alone, pursuing dramatic improvements to overall sustainability.鈥

Purpose: 鈥淭he Sony Research Award Program provides funding for cutting-edge academic research and helps build a collaborative relationship between faculty and Sony researchers. Both the Faculty Innovation Award and Focused Research Award create new opportunities for university faculties and research institutions to engage in pioneering research that could drive new technologies, industries and the future.鈥

Purpose: 鈥淭he Bruce and Jane Walsh Grant in Memory of John Holland supports scientific, scholarly, or applied research and/or educational activities investigating how personality, culture, and environment influence work behavior and health (mental and physical).鈥

LIMITED Retirement Research Foundation (RRF Foundation for Aging)

Title:

Application Deadlines: Limited Because WSU may only submit one Letter of Inquiry per grant cycle, Notices of Intent to apply must be sent to proposals@wichita.edu by September 20, 2024 at 12noon, in case an internal competition is needed.  The goal date for informing you if you have been chosen to proceed is October 4, 2024.  The Letter of Inquiry will be due to the sponsor by November 1, 2024, and if invited by the sponsor, Full Applications will be due February 5, 2025. 

Purpose: 鈥淩RF funds research that seeks to identify interventions, policies and practices to improve the well-being of older adults and/or their caregivers. Preference is given to projects aimed at generating practical knowledge and guidance that can be used by advocates, policy-makers, providers, and the aging network.鈥

Funding Agency: National Institutes of Health (NIH)

Title:

Application Deadlines: September 25, 2024 or September 25, 2025

Purpose: 鈥溾nvites eligible academic or research institutions to apply for funding support to purchase latest scientific equipment that will enhance and modernize research-supporting operations of existing shared biomedical research facilities. Targeted are laboratory research core facilities, animal research facilities, and other similar shared-use research spaces. The goal of this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) is to strengthen research-auxiliary activities of biomedical research facilities and to enhance the efficiency of their operations.  The NOFO does not support the purchase of scientific research instruments or their components, nor components of building-level infrastructure equipment that indirectly support research activities.鈥

Amount: $50,000-$350,000

Funding Agency: Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)

Title:

Application Deadlines: September 25, 2024 or January 25, 2025

Purpose: 鈥溾o invite grant applications that support healthcare safety by determining (1) whether and how certain breakthrough uses of Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems can affect patient safety; and (2) how AI systems can be safely implemented and used. AI has the potential to improve the safety, effectiveness, efficiency, accessibility, and affordability of healthcare. However, as with most technologies, this potential must be balanced by identifying and mitigating potential risks for patient harm and user burden.鈥

Amount: $500,000-$1,000,000 

Funding Agency: American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS)

Title:

Application Deadline: September 25, 2024

Purpose: 鈥淎CLS invites research proposals from scholars in all disciplines of the humanities and interpretive social sciences. In the 2024-25 competition cycle, the program will award up to 60 fellowships to scholars across all stages of the scholarly career. Approximately half of this year鈥檚 awards will support early-career scholars. The ultimate goal of the project should be a major piece of scholarly work by the applicant, which can take the form of a monograph, articles, publicly engaged humanities project, digital research project, critical edition, or other scholarly resources.鈥

Amount: $25,000

LIMITED National Science Foundation (NSF)

Title:

Application Deadlines: Limited Because WSU may only participate in only two applications as a lead or collaborative non-lead, Notices of Intent to apply must be sent to proposals@wichita.edu by September 26, 2024 at 12noon, in case an internal competition is needed.  The goal date for informing you if you have been chosen to proceed is October 10, 2024.  If selected, Full Applications will be due November 14, 2024. 

Purpose: 鈥淭he NRT Program accepts proposals in any interdisciplinary or convergent research theme of national importance and encourages specific priority research areas that change periodically. All interdisciplinary or convergent research themes should align with NSF or other national STEM research priority areas and have high potential to develop novel, innovative practices in graduate education. Proposers should describe the importance of the NRT project's thematic focus to the Nation and the need to train students for a variety of careers in that thematic area.鈥

Amount: Up to $3,000,000 for Track 1; Up to $2,000,000 for Track 2; Up to $100,000 per year for Track 2 Planning Grants

Funding Agency: U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA)

Title:

Application Deadline: September 27, 2024

Purpose: 鈥淭he Good Jobs Challenge supports regional workforce training systems to establish sectoral partnerships that train and place workers in good jobs. Good jobs are those that align with the Departments of Labor and Commerce Good Jobs Principles. The Good Jobs Challenge highlights workforce development as key to accelerating local economic growth and rebuilding regional economies so they are more resilient to future challenges, while providing good job opportunities for American workers to achieve economic mobility and security.   The awardees funded by the Good Jobs Challenge expand opportunities across diverse populations, regions, and communities, focusing on coordinated and comprehensive approaches to removing systemic barriers for workers through support services such as childcare and transportation, and opening doors to a variety of paid on-the-job training opportunities.鈥

Amount: $1,000,000-$8,000,000 

Funding Agency: U.S. Department of Commerce: National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)

Title:

Application Deadlines: Mandatory Concept Paper due September 30, 2024; If invited, Full Application due or around January 23, 2025

Purpose: 鈥淣IST issued a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for a new Manufacturing USA Institute, with a focus on using artificial intelligence (AI) to improve the resilience of U.S. manufacturing. NIST anticipates funding up to $70 million over five years to establish and operate this Manufacturing USA institute. NIST intends that the new institute will both contribute to and benefit from the expertise within the existing network of Manufacturing USA institutes. As required by the Manufacturing USA authorizing statute, NIST will ensure that the AI institute to be established will not substantially duplicate the work of the existing network of institutes.鈥

Amount: $70,000,000 over five years; Note, 1:1 Cost Share/Match is required. 

Funding Agency: Caplan Foundation for Early Childhood

Title:

Application Deadline: Letter of Intent due September 30, 2024

Purpose: 鈥淭he Caplan Foundation for Early Childhood is an incubator of promising research and development projects that appear likely to improve the welfare of young children, from infancy through 7 years, in the United States. The Foundation鈥檚 goal is to provide seed money to implement those imaginative proposals that exhibit the greatest chance of improving the lives of young children, on a national scale.鈥

Funding Agency: Department of the Interior

Title:

Application Deadline: September 30, 2024

Purpose: 鈥淭he principal objective of this Candidate Species Conservation funding opportunity is to accomplish conservation tasks for high priority candidate species (based on our annual Candidate Species Assessments) or other at-risk species in the United States, such that identified threats to the species may be reduced or eliminated. These efforts are based on cooperative relationships with states, non-governmental organizations, private landowners and those interested in habitat restoration or undertaking candidate and at-risk species research, surveys and monitoring, or educational outreach efforts.鈥

Amount: $1,000-$500,000

Funding Agency: Better Scientific Software (BSSw)

Title:

Application Deadline: September 30, 2024

Purpose: 鈥淭he main goal of the BSSw Fellowship program is to foster and promote practices, processes, and tools to improve developer productivity and software sustainability of scientific codes. We also anticipate accumulating a growing community of BSSw Fellowship alums who can serve as leaders, mentors, and consultants to increase the visibility of those involved in scientific software production and sustainability in the pursuit of scientific discovery. BSSw Fellows are selected annually based on an application process that includes the proposal of a funded activity that promotes better scientific software through a publicly available artifact. Each 2025 BSSw Fellow will receive up to $25,000 for an activity that promotes better scientific software. Activities can include organizing a workshop, preparing a tutorial, or creating content to engage the scientific software community, including broadening participation or promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion.鈥

Amount: Up to $25,000

Funding Agency: Endangered Languages Documentation Program (ELDP)

Title:

Application Deadline: October 1, 2024

Purpose: 鈥淭he ELDP provides grants for the documentation of endangered languages globally.  ELDP especially welcomes applications from documenters from language communities, local scholars and students from the country where the language is spoken/signed, as well as collaborative and interdisciplinary projects. There are no restrictions on nationality or host institution, language documenters of any nationality to undertake projects in any part of the world with our funding.鈥

Amount: Up to 10,000 Euros for Small Grants or Legacy Materials Grants: Up to 300,000 Euros for Major Documentation Projects

Funding Agency: National Science Foundation (NSF): National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS)

Title:

Application Deadlines: October 1, 2024 and December 2, 2024

Purpose: 鈥溾o support novel environmental health research in which an unpredictable event or policy change provides a limited window of opportunity to collect human biological samples or environmental exposure data. The primary motivation of the NOFO is to understand the consequences of natural and human-made disasters, emerging environmental public health threats, and policy changes in the U.S. and abroad. A distinguishing feature of an appropriate study is the need for rapid review and funding, substantially shorter than the typical NIH grant review/award cycle, for the research question to be addressed and swiftly implemented.鈥

Amount: The combined budget for direct costs for the 2-year project period may not exceed $275,000.

Funding Agency: VentureWell

Title:

Application Deadline: October 2, 2024

Purpose: 鈥淭he E-Team Program, part of the VentureWell Accelerator, supports student ventures as you embark down the path you鈥檙e likely to take as an innovator and entrepreneur. We help you advance your invention through a powerful mix of up to $25,000 in grant funding, entrepreneurship training, mentorship by dedicated staff, national recognition, and networking with peers and industry experts.鈥 

Amount: $5,000-$25,000

Funding Agency: Library of Congress

Title:

Application Deadline: October 2, 2024

Purpose: 鈥淲ith this notice, the Library seeks to solicit project proposals from organizations interested in becoming Regional Partners. The purpose of this notice is to identify awardee organizations to carry out all administrative and programmatic functions associated with managing TPS and Lewis-Houghton Civics and Democracy Initiative (LHI) regional subawards on behalf of the Library of Congress. Awardee organizations must have the capacity, reputation, and relationships to conduct outreach and marketing to educators, operating in large and small communities, who wish to enhance their teaching programs with Library of Congress materials and pedagogical approaches.鈥 

Amount: Up to $900,000

Title:

Purpose: 鈥淭he purpose of this interagency program solicitation is to support the development of transformative high-risk, high-reward advances in computer and information science, engineering, mathematics, statistics, behavioral and/or cognitive research to address pressing questions in the biomedical and public health communities. Transformations hinge on scientific and engineering innovations by interdisciplinary teams that develop novel methods to intuitively and intelligently collect, sense, connect, analyze and interpret data from individuals, devices and systems to enable discovery and optimize health.鈥 

Amount: $1,200,000 ($300,000 per year)

Because of the current limits in scalability and scope, the AI community is encouraged to expand existing test beds and infrastructure to make them AI-ready and appropriate for use in evaluating the impact and effect of AI tools and systems on users. To do this, proposers are encouraged to create teams of researchers who have expertise in AI as well as domain experts and staff managing existing test beds. Existing test beds and infrastructure can be found in a range of settings.鈥

鈥淭he aWARE tool is a web-based project led by the Division of Extramural Research and Training and the Division of Translational Toxicology. National Academies (NAS) AI + Y 2024 Series Hosted by the Chemical Sciences Roundtable: AI + Scalability: October 3, 2024

鈥淭his episode on the AI+Y series examines ways of applying data-driven analytics to achieve economies of scale by improving energy efficiency, reliability, and safety in industrial chemical processes. Obtaining these outcomes would require improvements in process monitoring to optimize responses to faults and ill conditions and to provide predictions to prevent future mishaps. Discussions will include case studies on how statistical models have been effectively applied in characterizing large, complex data sets and how inferential sensors are used to predict key variable properties or performance. In addition to instrumental data, speakers will also touch on the use of business data (e.g. scheduling, operational data, production forecast, etc.) to solve scheduling and control problems often encountered on large complex chemical sites.鈥

Learn to Use BeoShock for your Advanced Research Computing Needs

成人头条 continues to host Beoshock, a High-Performance Computing Cluster (HPC). This HPC is available and free to faculty members, researchers and students engaged in course work or research activities. BeoShock runs the CentOS Linux operating system and features approximately 720 processor cores, two high memory compute nodes with 1.5 terabytes of memory, and four graphics processing unit (GPU) accelerators. BeoShock also has a variety of software tools that may be helpful in your research endeavors, such as Matlab, Mathematica, R, Python and many more.

National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM): New Reports

NASEM has issued two new reports that may be of interest:  鈥A Plan to Promote Defense Research at Minority-Serving Institutions, a new report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, recommends ways to develop and strengthen the research capacity of historically Black colleges and universities, Tribal colleges and universities, and other minority-serving institutions (MSIs) so that they can contribute more fully to defense-related research.鈥 鈥淭he Federal Aviation Administration should update its methods for ensuring commercial aviation safety so that the agency can better evaluate and regulate new and innovative concepts for aviation operations and technologies, says a new report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. Building on an initial assessment published in 2022, the report explores how the FAA can improve its practices related to safety risk management and safety assurance, foster a stronger safety culture throughout commercial aviation, and better position itself to oversee and regulate a changing industry.鈥 Additional Publications from NASEM鈥檚 National Academies Press can be found .

National Institutes of Health (NIH) Will Require Use of Common Forms for Biographical Sketch and Current & Pending (Other) Support by May 25, 2025

鈥淣IH will implement the Common Forms without change to any collection fields. However, in accordance with NIH鈥檚 Peer Review Regulations at 42 Code of Federal Regulations Part 52h, NIH currently plans to continue collecting three required agency specific data elements (i.e., Personal Statement, Contributions to Science, and Honors) to assess qualifications. These data elements will be collected separately from the Common Forms on a new NIH Biographical Sketch Supplement.鈥  The Office of Research encourages WSU Principal Investigators to set up their profile in SciENcv and to email funding@wichita.edu for assistance in setting up their profile well in advance. 

National Institutes of Health (NIH): National Institute on Aging (NIA) Request for Information on Strategic Directions for Research

鈥淣IA is formulating its Strategic Directions for Research document for 2026-2030, and the Institute seeks public input on revisions to the current document and suggestions for new content.  NIA's Strategic Directions for Research document serves as a statement of NIA鈥檚 scientific priority areas within the rapidly evolving field of aging research and provides a framework for systematic analysis of NIA鈥檚 scientific portfolio. The document both complements and forms a solid foundation for more targeted and specific planning tools, including the National Alzheimer's Project Act plan and milestones and NIA's forthcoming strategic plan for diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. Therefore, in addition to input on current and potential new goals and objectives related to aging research, NIA welcomes input on any related topic for which dedicated NIA planning processes exist.鈥

National Institutes of Health (NIH): Request for Information (RFI) on Opportunities and Challenges in Enabling and Advancing Precision Medicine Artificial Intelligence (AI) by Integrating Clinical Imaging with Multimodal Data

鈥淐linical imaging can play critical roles in prediction, diagnosis, treatment planning, and response evaluation across a wide range of health conditions. AI approaches have catalyzed new opportunities in precision, or personalized, medicine, to integrate clinical imaging data with a variety of other health data, including data from electronic health records, genomics, laboratory diagnostics, and other experimental imaging systems. The purpose of this RFI is to solicit public comments on the current challenges and opportunities in developing trustworthy, cost-effective, accessible, ethical, and sustainable precision medicine AI algorithms that integrate medical images with other patient-related data to support clinical decision-making.鈥

National Institutes of Health (NIH): Notice of Special Interest (NOSI): Fundamental Science Research on Complementary and Integrative Health Approaches, Including Natural Products or Mind and Body Interventions

This NOSI describes 鈥淣ational Center of Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) priorities in innovative basic and mechanistic research or technology/method development research relevant to complementary and integrative health approaches and their impact on health outcomes, resilience, and well-being. Complementary health approaches include a broad range of practices and interventions that are not typically part of conventional medical care. Complementary approaches can be classified by their primary therapeutic input, which may be dietary (e.g., special diets, dietary supplements, herbs, prebiotics, and microbial-based therapies including probiotics), psychological (e.g., meditation, hypnosis, virtual reality, music-based interventions, relaxation therapies), physical (e.g., acupuncture, massage, chiropractic manipulation, light, devices related to these approaches), or a combination of psychological and physical (e.g., yoga, tai chi, dance therapies, some forms of art therapies). The dietary approaches include what have been previously categorized as natural products, whereas psychological and/or physical approaches encompass what have been commonly referred to as mind and body interventions. Integrative health brings conventional and complementary approaches together in a coordinated way. Integrative health also emphasizes multimodal interventions that aim to improve health in multiple interconnected domains, social, psychological, and physical, including multiple organs and systems.鈥

National Science Foundation (NSF) Seeks Proposals that Expand NAIRR Pilot Community: Dear Colleague Letter

鈥淭he NSF鈥檚 Advancing education for the future AI workforce (EducateAI) Initiative and the National Artificial Intelligence Research Resource (NAIRR) Pilot both aim to promote and diversify AI education and AI workforce development. (DCL) announces the interest of NSF in receiving proposals that expand the NAIRR Pilot community under two different focus areas, one focus area on community outreach and training to new and emerging researchers, and the other focus area on educators bringing inclusive AI-educational experiences to classrooms nationwide. Submissions led by teams located in Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research jurisdictions or rural areas, and from Minority Serving Institutions are encouraged.鈥

NIHCM Foundation Releases Infographic about Supporting the Health Care Needs of People with Disabilities

鈥淭he Americans with Disabilities Act was enacted in 1990. While this landmark civil rights鈥 legislation has been in effect for 30 years, people with disabilities still experience significant health disparities, barriers to care, discrimination, and poor health outcomes.  This new infographic shares the latest data on health for people with disabilities, including demographics and the rising cost of care, as well as approaches to improve care, home and community resources, and research.鈥

NIHCM Foundation Releases Infographic about Ransomware Attacks鈥 Impact on Rural Hospitals

鈥淎mid increasing cybersecurity threats aimed at urban and rural health care delivery systems, a novel study found that while ransomware attacks are less likely to occur in rural areas, the operational disruptions resulting from such attacks may have more pronounced effects on financially vulnerable rural hospitals. This study offers valuable insights for policymakers and health systems seeking to understand the ramifications of ransomware attacks on rural hospitals鈥 viability and operations, as well as the patients they serve.鈥

National Endowment for the Arts (NEA): Healing, Bridging, Thriving Summit Blog Series

鈥淥n January 30, 2024, the White House Domestic Policy Council and NEA co-hosted Healing, Bridging, Thriving: A Summit on Arts and Culture in our Communities, a first-of-its-kind convening to share insights and explore opportunities for arts organizations and artists to contribute to the health and well-being of individuals and communities, invigorate physical spaces, fuel democracy, and foster equitable outcomes. ARPA-H: Launches Platform Optimizing SynBio for Early Intervention and Detection in Oncology (POSEIDON) and Groundbreaking Lymphatic Interventions and Drug Exploration (GLIDE)

鈥淎RPA-H鈥檚 two newest programs - POSEIDON and GLIDE - offer interested industry and academic institutions the opportunity to attend upcoming Proposers鈥 Days, form teams, and submit proposals. The POSEIDON program intends to develop first-in-class, at-home, synthetic Multi-Cancer-Early Detection tests for the most sensitive and specific stage I detection of 30+ solid tumors using only breath and/or urine samples, while the GLIDE program aims to develop physical, pharmacologic, gene, and cell-based therapeutic interventions to treat primary and rare lymphatic disease and chronic conditions complicated by lymphatic dysfunction.
