Stomach flu is NOT the "flu!"
Influenza and the stomach flu are two completely different conditions. During the
winter season, flu-like symptoms are high and cases have increased! Influenza is a
respiratory viral infection of the nose, throat, and lungs. Stomach "flu" is a viral
infection of the stomach or intestines, otherwise known as gastroenteritis. Influenza
vaccines do not protect you from stomach viruses. There is treatment for both!
Insulin Resistance: Why it Matters for YOU in College
By Delane Vaughn, MD
Feeling drained after meals? No energy after class and work to study? Struggling with
cravings and brain fog?
It could be the insulin resistance, which is the root cause of type 2 diabetes. This
is a common condition where your body stops responding properly to insulin, the hormone
that regulates blood sugar. At a cellular level, sugar (aka glucose) is a source of
fuel. Your cells need insulin to burn this fuel and create cellular energy. Insulin
resistance is not just a future problem; it's happening now.
How do you change this, increase your energy, and clear your brain?
Avoid highly processed foods, refined carbs, and seed oils found in most dining hall
and fast-food meals. If it comes from a box, bag, or wrapper ... you need to avoid
it.
Want to check where you stand?
Track the foods you eat over the next 5 days. Determine where the majority of your
food is coming from. If 80% is coming from a box, bag or wrapper - you have some changes
to make. This simple step is a game-changer for lifelong health!

Do the winter months give you "SAD?"
Seasonal affective disorder (SAD), otherwise known as seasonal depression, can be
due to lack of sunlight. Photo therapy, with the use of a light lamp, can increase
energy, sleep, and mental health. Dr. Kris Thurber, DNP, uses a light lamp daily while
working in Student Health Services. Light lamp boxes can be rented through Student
Health!
