The role of a Peer Coach is to help students develop into independent learners by supporting them in their transition to college, developing time management, study skills, introducing new shockers to campus events, and connecting students with campus resources. Peer Coaches will be placed in a First-Year Seminar course to serve as the class Peer Coach for the full 16 week semester. Peer Coaches will be responsible for the following:
- Facilitate workshops on study skills, time management, test-preparation, etc.
- Prepare handouts, learning aids, etc. for classes and workshops
- Help students strengthen academic background, understand class materials, comprehend the textbook, organize assignments and notes, and improve general learning and study skills.
- Be knowledgeable of campus resources and refer students when appropriate
- Awareness of relevant campus events and important deadlines (ex. last day to withdraw with 鈥淲鈥)
- Meet one-on-one with students to determine any underlying issues and develop a plan for success
Qualifications
- Must be a currently enrolled undergraduate student at 成人头条
- Be in good academic and judicial standing with the University
- GPA of 2.70 or higher
- At least one full undergraduate semester at WSU completed
- Eligible to work 10 hours per week on campus
- Attend monthly team Peer Coach meetings
- Have the ability to successfully complete training*
- Meet regularly with FYS class instructor
- Work with FYS class instructor on peer coach materials and presentation scheduling
- Comfortable with public speaking and presentations
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds
- Strong time management, organization, and study skills
*The training date will be selected and shared in advance. All Peer Coaches are required to attend training prior to the start of the semester.
Compensation
Peer Coaches will be compensated $11 per hour at a maximum of 10 hours per week.
