You should always address problems with your instructor first. Except in extreme circumstances, students who have not attempted to resolve problems with their instructors first will not be met with by other department members. However, if after an earnest meeting with the instructor the problem is not resolved then you should contact the proper English department personnel listed below.
English 011, 013, 015, and 100: During fall and spring semesters, students enrolled in these classes should arrange to meet with the Basic Skills Coordinator, Melinda DeFrain. She can be contacted at melinda.defrain@wichita.edu. If needed, the Basic Skills Coordinator will involve the Director of the Writing Program and/or the English Department Chair. During summer months, after consulting with the instructor, inquiries should be directed to the English Department Chair.
English 101 and all Online Courses: If students are enrolled in English 101, they should speak to the Director of the Writing Program. If the problem needs further attention the Director will involve the English Department Chair.
English 102: During fall and spring semesters, if students are enrolled in English 102, they should speak to Mary Sherman. Students can contact her at mary.sherman@wichita.edu. If the problem needs further attention she may ask to involve the Director and/or the English Department Chair. During summer months, after consulting with the instructor, inquiries should be directed to the English Department Chair.
English 210: Students enrolled in these courses should speak with the Director of the Writing Program. If the problem needs further attention the Director will involve the English Department Chair.
English 385, 680, 780: Students enrolled in these classes should direct their concerns to the Director of the Writing Program. If the problem needs further attention the Director will involve the English Department Chair
Students are encouraged to go visit their English teachers during office hours for help on assignments. Students are also encouraged to visit the Writing Center to seek help on their written assignments. The Writing Center can help improve sentence, structure, and grammar problems within writing assignments.
English 101 has four required paper assignments along with reading, quizzes and homework.
English 102 has three required paper assignments along with readings, quizzes, and homework.
The English department has a strict attendance policy consistent with university practices. The department, further, makes no distinction between 鈥渆xcused鈥 or 鈥渦nexcused鈥 absences. Persistent tardies may also be counted toward total absences, though this will be made clear in the syllabi for the class. The English department has a policy that instructs anyone absent for 20 percent or more of the class meetings will automatically fail this class; however, instructors may appeal for waivers of this policy in unusual circumstances.
There are required textbooks for every English class. You are allowed to buy, rent, or borrow textbooks as long as you have them for class. However, you are required to have the necessary textbooks to complete your English class work, homework, and paper assignments.
