Panopto Training

Welcome to the Panopto Training homepage. This page provides stage-by-stage training on using Panopto; from configuring your course and recording a video, to editing your work, creating assignment submission areas for students, and much more.

Before you begin, let's briefly introduce Panopto. Panopto is a video capture and indexing tool that will allow you to record lectures and link videos to your Blackboard course. With it, you can capture from a single source or multiple sources such as main screen capture, PowerPoint slides, a camera source, or a combination of these. Panopto can be used to provide recorded material to a class, to colleagues, and by students for submitting videos for course assessments. To begin working with Panopto, you will need to configure your Blackboard course.

  • Step 1: Configuring (AKA Provisioning) Your Course for Panopto Configuring your course is the essential first step to using Panopto.
    • If you have already configured your course, and want to add permission for your class to access videos in other courses, you will need to Re-Configure.
  • (Alternative) Step 1: Re-Configuring (Adding Other Course Folders to Your Permissions) Reconfiguring a course can be used to "reset" the permissions for that course, as well as add other course folders to the permissions so that the current course can access videos created in other courses.
  • Step 2: Downloading the Panopto Recorder to Your Computer The Panopto Recorder is a convenient tool for users to record directly on their computers. Videos can be created online and immediately uploaded to the Panopto server, or can be created off-line and uploaded at a later date.
  • Step 3: Signing Into the Panopto Recorder (PC users)  If you previously downloaded Panopto, but have not updated the recorder since Spring 2018, you will need to update and change the server information. The Panopto server is: wichita.hosted.panopto.com
  • Step 3: Signing Into the Panopto Recorder (Mac users)  If you previously downloaded Panopto, but have not updated the recorder since Spring 2018, you will need to update and change the server information. The Panopto server is: wichita.hosted.panopto.com
  • Step 4: Basic Recording Using the Panopto Recorder to create videos allows the user to capture content from multiple sources including internal and external cameras, slides, and desktop. Videos can be uploaded automatically to the selected folder upon completion of the recording.
  • Step 5: Basic Editing The Panopto Editing tool is a robust feature that allows users to cut/trim sections of their recording, edit the placement of slides, add captions, and more. This Basic Editing training focuses on creating "cuts" in the video and editing slides.
    • Adding a Video File to Panopto Although the Panopto Recorder is an excellent tool for capturing video, if you have your own raw video file--such as an MP4--you can still upload to Panopto and utilize those editing, captioning, and sharing tools.
  • (Optional) Step 7: Panopto Student Video Assignments Do you want students to create videos for an assignment? Creating an Assignment Folder for students gives students "creator" rights in Panopot--much like configuring the course did for you as the instructor. Students will be able to download the recorder, create videos, edit them, and upload them to the assignments folder.
    • If you want students to create their own assignment videos, IDA has created a short set of instructions to help them get started. Just copy and paste the following instructions and fill in the Panopto assignment folder name for students to begin.
    • Instructions to Students for Panopto Video Assignment: "To record your student video, you will need to download and install the Panopto Recorder and create a video. Please review the quick tutorial video on , as well as the video on . Your Panopto assignment folder is named..."
